Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: An Honest Comparison

Few questions come up more often in our consultations than this one. The honest answer is that neither choice is wrong — but they are different purchases, and you deserve a clear-eyed comparison rather than a sales pitch for whichever one a jeweller happens to stock. We set both, so here is the unvarnished version.

They are the same stone — physically

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond: identical crystal structure, identical hardness, identical fire and brilliance. Graded on the same 4Cs scales by the same laboratories. No jeweller can tell them apart by eye; it takes specialized equipment reading trace growth patterns. If your priority is the look on the hand, the two are indistinguishable.

Where they differ: price

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost a fraction of the price of natural stones of equal grade — often 60–80% less. Practically, that means the same budget buys a dramatically larger or higher-grade stone. A budget that buys a fine 1-carat natural centre stone might buy a 2.5-carat lab stone of equal cut quality. For maximum visual impact per dollar, lab wins decisively.

Where they differ: value retention

Natural diamonds hold resale value far better. Lab-grown prices have fallen steadily as production scales, and a lab stone bought today will likely be worth less at resale than an equivalent purchase of natural. If you think of the stone partly as a store of value or an heirloom with market worth, natural has the stronger case. If you think of it as a purchase to be worn and loved — like most fine things — this matters less than it sounds.

Where they differ: meaning

Some clients care deeply that their stone formed a billion years ago in the earth; for them, only natural feels right, and no discount changes that. Others prefer the guaranteed origin of a lab stone. Both are legitimate. The only wrong choice is one made without knowing what you were choosing.

Our approach

Every stone we sell — natural or lab-grown — is disclosed plainly, graded honestly, and priced transparently when you enquire. In a custom consultation we will often show you both options side by side at your budget so you can see the trade-off with your own eyes.
